ECB’s Makhlouf Dismisses Euro’s Readiness to Challenge Dollar Dominance
European Central Bank Governing Council member Gabriel Makhlouf has bluntly rejected suggestions that the euro could soon displace the US dollar as the global financial system's anchor currency. Speaking at a French economic conference, the Irish central bank governor highlighted Europe's unfinished institutional architecture as the fundamental barrier.
"Frankly, Europe's economic system is still not formed," Makhlouf stated, pointing to the absence of unified fiscal authority or European equivalent to US Treasuries. His remarks come amid growing debate about currency diversification in global reserves, though he cautioned against interpreting market fluctuations as structural shifts.
The eurozone's incomplete integration continues to limit the currency's global role despite its use across 20 nations and status as the world's second-most traded currency. Makhlouf's comments underscore the ECB's longstanding position that deeper political union must precede any meaningful challenge to dollar hegemony.
